Let's talk about Astronomy and what could happen to us

,Today in class we mostly talked about the notes that each of us had to do for our celestial body project. We were having a forum and the students and Ms.D were asking questions to each other about their planets. During this class we mostly focused on the Sun (Kamil), the meteors etc, the comets and the asteroids.

For the Sun we first learned that G2V means that it is a spectrum star which arrived at half of its life. The Sun is a G2V star. We also learned that the sign of the Sun which is a circle with a dot inside comes from the Egyptian god RA. At the end we arrived to the fact that the Sun was created 4.5 billions year ago and it will die in 4.5 billion years ago, which makes it a middle star age.

After with Severyn we learned that the golf of Mexico was made due to a meteorite. This meteorite is also probably the cause of the end of the dinosaurs. Here are the definition and difference between meteors, meteorites and meteoroids.

“Meteoroids are small bodies that travel through space. Meteoroids are smaller than asteroids; most are smaller than the size of a pebble. Meteoroids have many sources. Most meteoroids come from asteroids that are broken apart by impacts with other asteroids. Other meteoroids come from the Moon, from comets, and from the planet Mars.”

“A meteor is a meteoroid that has entered the Earth's atmosphere, usually making a fiery trail as it falls. It is sometimes called a shooting star or a falling star.”

“A meteorite is a meteor that has fallen to Earth. These rare objects have survived a fiery fall through the Earth's atmosphere and have lost a lot of mass during that process. Meteorites are made up of rock and/or metals.”

For these to be fire ball it has to be really big and brighter than Venus (magnitude -4).

After we talked shortly about comets (Cornelia) and what they are. Here is the definition of a comet.
“A comet is an icy body that releases gas or dust. Most of the comets that can be seen from Earth travel around the Sun in long, oval orbits. A comet consists of a solid nucleus (core) surrounded by a cloudy atmosphere called the coma and one or two tail.”

After this we moved on to Asteroids (Emma) and started with a scary subject which was that we could die in 2036 because an asteroid could crash. The day when the Asteroid will go into or pass near the belt should be Friday, April 13, 2029! The way it will go will persist of the angle the regions that can receive it are North America, Monsoon Asia or the Pacific Ocean which will make it produce a big tsunami that will be enormous compare to the tsunami in Indonesia in 2004. Asteroids are basically very very big meteorites.

Here is a simulation of the asteroid

We also spoke about terrestrial planets which are planets that are composed. These are the following terrestrial planets in our Solar Galaxy: Mercury, Mars, Venus and Earth.

The opposite of these planets are Gas Giant planets which are planets composed of gas. These are the following gas planets in our Solar System: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Remember to check Moodle; we got a lot of stuff to do!

  1. Thanks Kamil but your video doesn't function. It may be my internet as I've had some issues with this blog. Anyway, your post was interesting and the pictures you posted are AWESOME! Thanks for posting the difference between Meteor, Meteorite and Meteoroid.

    Thanks for posting Kamil.

  3. Very good work Kamil. You have posted good information, pictures and also a video that all have to do with your blog post. However your blog isn’t perfect, it is nearly and I will try to point out some of the things that you can improve to make this a very decent post.

First you have chosen good pictures and videos however the font color isn’t all clear, the third, fourth, and fifth paragraph all have a color that is somewhat difficult to read. Next, there are some very few grammar mistakes like in the first paragraph in the second sentence, “We were having a forum and were asking questions to each other about their planets.” It would be better to say that the teacher asked certain questions to all the students about their celestial bodies. Then there is a little mistake in paragraph two where you said that the Sun was created 4.5 billions year ago and that it will die in 4.5 billion years ago, I think you should change it to: the Sun was created 4.5 billion years ago and that it will die in 4.5 billion years which makes it a middle age star. Next in paragraph three when you say that the golf of Mexico has been made by a meteorite I would change it to: the Gulf of Mexico was made due to a meteorite. And last you sometimes forgot to capitalize the Sun.

And that is everything that I found which is mostly just changing some words however truly this is a great post and you have really showed how you have improved your English with your new vocabulary. Keep up the good work.

  4. Well done with your scribe post Kamil! The post you made was interesting to read, and also, the pictures you posted, made it more appealing, and the video was also useful. However, there are also suggestions about how can you improve your post:

There were some spelling mistakes such as in the sentence "The way it will go will persist of the angle the regions that can receive it are North America, Monsoon Asia or the Pacific Ocean which will make it produce a big tsunami that will be enormous compare to the tsunami in Indonesia in 2004". I would change the word "compare" into "compared".
But you did a good job overall! :)

  6. Dear Kamil :)

I think that this Scribe Post is the best one I have seen so far, inclduing the ones from 3rd Quarter! The point that proves my opinion is the whole structure of your post. It is so brilliant that as soon as I have started reading it, I couldn't have stopped! So, thumbs up on the structure and the simplicity. Another point that proves my opinion is the font, layout and pictures (basically the whole interface, layout) of your post. The pictures of the sun and a meteor are both having the orange tones which create a perfect color harmony between the pics and the font which is part black, and part orange. The video was informative, and yes, it has worked fine for me. Your spelling {you've make a big progress in your English :)} is almost perfect, just some parts are needed to be fixed. For ex. "After with Severyn we learned that the golf of Mexico was made due to a meteorite." golf of Mexico should be changed to Gulf of Mexico. Thumbs up for the grammar too :). Last, but not least, the clarity and the scientific realtionship of your post are good too. Your text is clear enough, and I assume that everyone would understand it. Talking of scientific relationship, it is very good. Your whole post is very realted to science and has a lot of scientific prrof for it (links, pictures). Again, thumbs up :).
Concluding this critiscism of mine, I want to say that You have put a lot of effort into this post and that you are interested in astronomy.

    Severyn

P.S. Next time, make someone proofread your text :)

  7. Well done Kamil, your post is very good. I liked how you had a lot of good and useful information and your pictures were good also. I also like how you put a youtube video to show us about that comet. I would suggest that you add more links and proofread your work.
    Overall, great work!

  8. Awesome job kamil! I thought your scribe was well organized, neat, and quite comprehendable as to what we had gone through class that day. The variety of pictures you used were also appropriate as they demonstrated each of your topics clearly. The video posted was awfully insightful, giving me an even greater knowledge of Asteroid Apophis. I do, however, reccommened that you review your spell check and grammar as there were some mistakes thoughout the scribe. All in all, great job!

  9. Hello Kamil,

I think your blog is very awesome and the pictures are really captivating my attention, the topic of your post is very interesting and I think you explained everything very well. I have a two sugestions, first of all, you should have a chosen a shorter movie because I don't think people will listen to it for ten minutes but it is still pretty interesting. Also, you spelled stuff wrong, it's "stuff" not "stuffs".

  10. Kamil - Please come speak with me about your embedded movie - there are some problems with it and I would like to speak with you about this. Thanks! Ms. D.

  11. Kamil - thanks for changing your embedded video. However next time you need to be more careful with what you use, how you spell things and wording the first time you post. These are things you need to proof before you post a written section. You have some nice pictures to accompany your writing and the colors used work well. The hyperlink to Moodle is helpful. Keep in mind the newest requirement of this quarter's blog was to relate what we discussed to the real-world; you have not done that. Some of the parts here are well done and some need work.

  12. Nice work, Kamil!
I really like this post of yours. It explains what we've learned very well, and that's good.
I saw that you wrote that "a comet consists of a solid nucleus, surrounded by a cloudy atmosphere called coma." I just wanted to add and make sure you know that coma is when the comet starts to shine.
